Career / Professional Highlights


Karen is currently Dean at AIFE and a member of the AIFE Academic Board. Karen was previously Dean of Education with AEMG (2019-2023). Within this role Karen managed two key departments that operate from Melbourne – the English Language Department and the Discipline Department and liaised with AEMG staff across China.

Karen’s previous role was as Dean and Head of School of the Faculty of Education at the University of Tasmania (UTAS). Karen is now Professor Emeritus in Health and Physical Education at UTAS, where her research interests are in social and emotional wellbeing, and the broader field of educational psychology, particularly human development. Karen continues to supervise PhD students and write research papers.

Karen’s first job was as a health and physical education teacher; this experience led to her extensive career in education. She taught in primary, secondary and senior secondary schools and was involved in school leadership in Tasmania, in both state and independent schools.
